After having worked in the Dallas arts and culture scene for months, I have decided to create a series, in which I will highlight local musicians. The Dallas music scene is bursting with hidden and undiscovered talents. Oftentimes, you can catch said artists performing at nearby venues for very low admission prices.
If you or somebody you know would like to be featured in my series, feel free to email me with your social media handles, as well as audio files.
Below are a few of Dallas’s up-and-coming artists that have recently caught my attention.
Jon Pattie is a 22-year-old singer/songwriter currently touring in promotion of his upcoming EP, 321. The EP is set for release on August 26th, and is preceded by his debut EP, The Home Inside My Head. Pattie is skilled in the arts of songwriting, guitar playing, and ivory tickling. His vocals can best be described as Marcus Mumford meets Justin Vernon. On August 27th, Jon Pattie will be hosting a live stream event, following the release of his sophomore EP. Check out “Home”, the lead single from Pattie’s forthcoming EP, 321.
Kali is a 20-year-old singer/songwriter with a chill, laid-back flow and her own unique style. In June, Kali released a cover of Zayn’s “Pillowtalk” as well as her debut single “Fuckboy”. Her vocals can best be described as a mix of Jhene Aiko and Phoebe Ryan. Kali is currently in the process of working on her debut EP. Check out her cover of Lil Wayne’s “I’m Single”, which has received over 8,000 plays since its release.
Northern National is a two-piece indie alternative rock band based in Dallas, TX. Their vocal and instrumental styles are similar to those of Imagine Dragons and X Ambassadors, in the ways that they sound very pop-friendly and radio-ready. The music video for their single “Love is Fire” recently premiered via Vevo. Check out their newest song “The New Age”, below.
Hailing from Fort Worth, 88 Killa is a young rapper with a flow like Gambino combined with bold lines like those of Pusha T. He has recently signed a deal with U.K.-based label, DEFDISCO, which handled the release of his new EP, 88 BPM. This past weekend, 88 Killa held a party at Oak Cliff’s famous Spinster Records to celebrate the release of his EP. Check out his song, “Boomerang”, below.
NEONNOAH’s sound simply does not fit in one specific genre. It’s a pleasant mix of pop, indie-rock, electronic, and hip-hop. The traveling four-piece can be seen performing at venues all across Texas. Their new single “Atlas” is available for purchase and streaming now.
When you combine G-Eazy’s charisma with Schoolboy Q’s aggressive flow, the result is AP Wade. The 22-year-old rapper has been active on Dallas’s hip-hop scene for almost two years. This past July, he opened up for Atlanta-based rapper Rich The Kid on his Rich Forever Tour at Gas Monkey Bar and Grill. Wade’s Soundcloud catalog consists of everything from stoner jams to trap bangers, most of which are downloadable for free. Check out his new song, “She Roll My Weed” below.
