Couldn’t make it to ACL this year? Luckily, you don’t have to stray too far from home to hear some great music. The Dallas music scene has something for everybody.
Blue, The Misfit
Brandon Blue, better known as “Blue, the Misfit”, is a Dallas native with a gritty flow and impeccable rhyming skills incomparable with those of anyone else. He also produces most of his own instrumentals, and contributes to projects by other Dallas artists. Blue has collaborated with big names, including the likes of Snow tha Product and Tony Williams. His new album Perfect Night, For a Funeral is set for release on October 28th, and he will be announcing shows and performances in the near future.
Plano native Chavis Chance is a student at Berklee College of Music in Boston. His acoustic singer/songwriter style can best be described as a more humble John Mayer crossed over with Marcus Mumford. His debut EP, Six Good Songs is set for digital release this Friday.
Weatherford native Matt Tedder is making his name known in Dallas and Fort Worth. Albeit not related to Ryan Tedder, he possesses the songwriting ability, with the power to create soulful songs likely to get stuck in your head. Tedder has previously appeared on The Voice and recently released his new EP, California Mercy Me.
Kirk Thurmond & The Millennials
In an era of “trapsoul” style of R&B, it feels nostalgic for a band to deliver an acoustic 90s/2000s R&B sound. Kirk Thurmond & The Millennials delivers coffee-house style music with soul and funk suitable for any occasion. Lead singer Kirk Thurmond recently welcomed a baby boy with his wife. Kirk Thurmond & The Millennials have performed at many local venues and have made an appearance on Good Morning Texas.
Sam Lao is a singer/rapper based in Dallas, whose raunchy lyrics and flows are reminiscent to those of Lil Kim in the ’90s. However, her instrumentals and artistic style give her music a modern touch. Lao’s EP SPCTRM is available for streaming on Soundcloud for free, and her website is stocked with stylish fan merchandise.
Up-and-comer Keegan Johnson recently released his EP, Layover, available for free streaming and download on Soundcloud. The three-track EP was written and produced primarily by himself and Dallas-based producer, Chisom Ekweani. Johnson’s sound can be described as minimalistic yet emotional and soulful, similar to the sounds of Jon Bellion, and Drake, with the pop-friendliness of Nick Jonas.
