As mainstream music makes the transition from trap-style sounds to dancehall beats, you will soon hear a new style of music taking “controlla” of the radio. A lot these electronic-infused island sounds are influenced by R&B singer Partynextdoor.
Partynextdoor is of Jamaican and Trinidadian descent, and he is signed to rapper Drake’s label, OVO Sound. He released his first project, a self-titled EP, in 2013, however, he rose to fame last year after writing two songs (“Work” & “Sex With Me”) on Rihanna’s eighth studio album, Anti.
His most recently release is “Still Got Time,” a collaboration with Zayn, set to feature on the latter’s upcoming sophomore album.
Partynextdoor is also credited for writing parts of “Shining,” DJ Khaled’s collaboration with Beyoncé and Jay-Z.
While his most recent full-length album, Partynextdoor 3, may have have been released last summer, 2017 seems to be the year that Drake’s protégé has locked down. Aside from the aforementioned collaborations, he has also released collaborations with Drake, Major Lazer and Nicki Minaj. He is also rumored to have ghostwritten the latter’s latest single, “Regret in your Tears.”
Whether or not the rumors surrounding Minaj’s single are true, Partynextdoor has a distinct, recognizable sound, and several A-list artists are seeking him out to pen tracks in that style.
The first quarter of 2017 is at its end, and so far, mainstream music appears to be moving away from trap and EDM and transitioning over to dancehall sounds, popularized by the likes of Rihanna and Partynextdoor.
Apart from his recent releases, Partynextdoor also won the “Songwriter of the Year” award at this year’s MTV Woodie Awards. He is also set to release new music of his own later this year.
In the meantime, his demo for Rihanna’s number-one single, “Work,” can be streamed below.
